How A Printed Book Becomes A Digital eBook

By Jeff Dunn, Edudemic

A new visual guide lets you in on the ‘behind the scenes’ of how a standard printed book becomes an interactive eBook. As you can see, there’s a lot more to the process than just your typical ‘strip and scan’ system where you peel the binding off a book and just feed it through a heavy-duty scanner. In fact, there is an editorial process, digitization process, and a lot of work required to actually make the eBook more than just a standard old PDF. While a PDF is still preferable to many, often times a scanned PDF is not able to be reliably searched. For example, optical character recognition (OCR) only works so well. You need a lot of steps to figure out the best way to make an eBook as useful as possible. If you’re looking to turn a book (of any kind) into a digital eBook, use this visual guide as a way to start your long and hopefully fun journey!
