Report: Faculty Support Lacking for Wide Adoption of Digital Learning

Most colleges and universities are thinking and acting strategically regarding their digital learning initiatives. Most cover digital learning in their school’s strategic plan, and a large number have made it a core aspect of their plans. Yet, execution is uneven and digital learning hasn’t come close to meeting administrator or faculty expectations. That summary comes out ofa new report produced by Tyton Partners in collaboration with the Babson Survey Research Group. A similar subject was undertaken in 2014 when Tyton interviewed more than 2,700 postsecondary faculty and administrators on their use and perceptions of digital courseware. The latest report updates that research and examines findings from two fall 2016 surveys of a national sample of 3,500 postsecondary respondents.

MTSU is new national model for online student success advising course

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities is offering the six-lesson, self-paced course titled “A SMART Approach to Student Success: Strategic Management of Advising Reform and Technology” on its website, www.aplu.org. APLU gleaned content for the course from interviews and information from MTSU and four other institutions of higher learning: Austin Community College in Austin, Texas; Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado; Georgia State University in Atlanta; and Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, Washington.

Student at Risk: Now What?

Retention technology has revolutionized the way schools identify struggling students and manage the advising process — but the hard part is what happens after a student is flagged “at risk.” Two institutions share how they have fine-tuned their intervention strategies. It used to be that Ramapo College of New Jersey instructors would be asked by myriad departments — athletics, specialized services and various financial aid offices — to fill out questionnaires giving feedback about the students in their classes. The goal was to find out how students were doing and whether they needed extra help. These surveys came in a multitude of formats and might, in some cases, ask about the same student who belonged to multiple programs. At best, said Chris Romano, vice president of enrollment management and student affairs, the response rate would be about 40 percent. The faculty feedback that did come in would really only go to whichever entity had done the requesting, and the faculty themselves would rarely hear back about what actions had been taken. The results would go into a black hole, never to be seen again.

Creating Engaging Assignments

Miller (2011) defined student engagement as “students’ willingness to actively participate in the learning process and to persist despite obstacles and challenges. Indicators of student engagement include class attendance and participation, submission of required work, involvement in the learning environment, and participation in the extra-curricular learning opportunities provided on their campus” (2). Each of the three case studies presented here details an example of course assignments that led to significant engagement by students.

Teachers’ Perspectives and Practices in Applying Technology to Enhance Learning in the Classroom

The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the classroom activities has become more famous to the teachers over the last decade. This study tries to investigate the teachers’ perspectives and practices toward the use of ICT in their classroom activities. A survey was conducted to collect the data of the research. Using a revised expectancy-value theory called the Technology Implementation Questionnaire (TIQ), a questionnaire was administered among 20 elementary teachers. The findings revealed that there are still teachers who have more than 10 years experiences in teaching but they never got any formal training on using ICT. The lack of proficiency in ICT such as in using software, lack of technical support from the school also make them feel stressed out even though they have positive perspectives in applying ICT in their classroom activities.

Apple Watch, wearable technology raising cheating fears at universities

The Apple Watch is being banned in universities and standardized testing centers worldwide to prevent cheating. The Apple Watch, along with other wearable technology, is forcing a number of universities and colleges to institute bans on the technology to curb potential cheating on exams and tests. While no university in Arizona has instituted such bans on wearable tech, the Chronicle for Higher Education reports that universities in Australia have recently placed restrictions on smart watches. The University of New South Wales also banned wristbands during exams.

Online Education Can Mean Year-Round Learning

While summer can be a great time for family fun, it can also pose a challenge to many students. That’s because students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning. This is commonly known as the “summer slide.” Without the continuation of education online virtually year-round, children can lose knowledge and skills. This is particularly true for those in low-income families who may not have access to enrichment opportunities such as camp, tutoring and regular trips to the library. The good news is, there’s a wealth of educational resources available online for free, so families can turn the “summer slide” into a chance for academic growth. Unfortunately, about 30 percent of Americans, many of whom live below the poverty line, don’t have Internet access at home.

Survey on Digital Games Use in the Classroom

A survey of grade school educators on using games in the classroom was recently released by the Games and Learning Publishing Council (funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). A few findings that stand out:


55% of the surveyed teachers who include games in their classroom use these digital games with their students weekly. This suggests rising numbers of students who will be accustomed to the idea of games as yet another familiar method of the classroom, as at that level of use it’s no longer about providing novelty. (Of course, there are plenty of other teachers who don’t use them at all.)


45% of the surveyed teachers listed insufficient time as a barrier to bring games into the classroom while 44% cited cost.
