Students stuck between Canvas, Blackboard

by Kenneth Cooper, Temple News

At the beginning of Fall 2017, some students voiced their frustration about the transition from Blackboard to Canvas on social media and among each other. With about 60 percent of the courses still being taught using Blackboard and the other 40 percent now being taught using Canvas, many students are currently using both learning management systems to navigate their courses this semester. Juggling between the two systems is leaving many students confused. Although some students are confused by the switch, Canvas has received an “overwhelmingly positive” response across campus.

How Education Policy Shapes the EdTech Market

by Matthew Lynch, tech Edvocate

Even during lean times, school districts have been eager to invest in technology in the classroom, opening up all kinds of opportunity for edtech companies. But this market is unpredictable and influenced by many unseen factors. A major factor in the rise and fall of edtech companies is shifting educational policies. On a national and regional level, such policies have influenced the edtech market profoundly.  Here are a few examples which demonstrate this influence.

How to Have a Distributed Meeting

By Joshua Kim, Inside Higher Ed

My advice for running successful distributed meetings comes from what I have seen work in synchronous online learning. If you can get a synchronous online class session to run well – then you can also run a good distributed meeting. Note – my advice for distributed meetings has nothing to do with webinars. Webinars are almost bad because of issues of scale. There are too many people on most webinars to allow for meaningful conversation. Your model for good distributed meetings should not be webinars, but teaching.

Online-based learning a focus for WISD

by JELANI GIBSON, Weatherford Democrat

Inclusive classrooms, expansion of the learning management system Canvas, increased Google cloud platform usage and other online-based solutions to learning will be among the Weatherford Independent School District’s educational priorities for the 2016—17 school year, the district’s board of trustees were told Monday. Interconnected goals and approaches to education are important, said Dr. Lance Campbell, the school district’s secondary education director. Personalized learning for summer school students is a priority as well, Campbell said. “We typically take kids from summer school and hire teachers … we can personalize our learning experiences for those kids. That’s where the whole idea came from. Teachers were assigned and worked with them individually.” Establishing relationships and a love of learning is something of importance, Campbell said.

Obama administration unveils College Scorecard to praise and criticism

By Tara García Mathewson, Education Dive

President Obama’s College Scorecard, a shadow of the college rating system he first proposed, went live late Friday with an incredible amount of data. While supporters are happy to see new data previously unavailable to students and families researching schools, critics point to a complete lack of context for any of it, especially for schools that serve primarily nontraditional or minority populations. NPR reports the scorecard covers the old basics like cost and graduation rate, as well as new data about how much students make 10 years after entering school, what portion of first-generation students are at a school, and what percentage of students pay at least $1 of principal on their federal loans within three years of leaving school.

CTE sheds its stigma

By Laura Devaney, eSchool News

Instead of being dismissed as the class for low-achieving or behaviorally-challenged students, CTE has emerged as a way for students to develop practical skills while participating in rigorous and high-quality courses. In fact, 94 percent of high school students are part of CTE—and this doesn’t include the millions of postsecondary students who also are enrolled in CTE programs, according to the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). Students who focus on CTE programs have an average high school graduation rate of 90 percent, compared to an average national freshmen graduation rate of 75 percent, according to ACTE data.

Abbotsford School District directing parents to online learning resources for kids

by News 1130

It might be a bit hard for students to pick up where they left, considering the amount of time the teachers have been on strike. But the Abbotsford School District is providing links to learning materials on its website to help keep children’s minds sharp during the labor dispute. Superintendent Kevin Godden says directing parents to LearnNowBC not only provides for children in all grades, but also helps the parents.
