Learning Designers as Digital Nomads

Will more higher ed people go permanently mobile? If you are as clueless as I was about the digital nomad life, here is the quick and dirty summary. Digital nomads, as you would expect, combine global travel with laptop mediated employment. They work wherever they live, and live wherever they work. Anyone who has gone full digital nomad does not have a permanent address, a lease, or a mortgage. What they do have is the need to earn an income by working. The digital nomad either works remotely for a single employer, or strings consulting and freelance jobs together in the digital gig economy. The digital nomad life is such a thing that companies such as Roam have been started to cater to this creative wandering class. Roam has live / work spaces in Bali, Miami, London and Tokyo – with more on the way. For $500 a week you get a sparsely furnished private bedroom and bathroom, good WiFi, and access to a communal kitchen. You also get a community of fellow remote workers and freelancers, all working together on their separate projects.

Purdue University receives HLC approval for Purdue Global

Purdue University Global is set to launch after receiving final approval from the Higher Learning Commission. Monday’s (March 5) notice of approval was the last step in the regulatory process for the new university, first announced in April 2017. “We are grateful for the Higher Learning Commission’s decision to approve Purdue University’s conversion of Kaplan University to Indiana’s newest public institution of higher education, Purdue Global,” said Purdue President Mitch Daniels. “It opens a new era for our institution, with the opportunity to expand our land-grant mission to millions of adult students around the country. That opportunity brings with it the responsibility to provide the highest quality online education, not only to our new adult learners, but to all residential and online Boilermaker students. “Starting today, Purdue University hopes to take a leading role in online learning nationally.”

Embrace the Unexpected: New Tools Transform Teaching and Learning

This notion — that “faculty resistance” is so pervasive that instructional designers would benefit from advice on how to overcome it — speaks volumes about this relationship. Faculty and technical staff have great potential for collaboration, but there’s a decent chance that friction may occur instead. Bridging this gap may require more than simply teaching faculty to use new tools. For some instructors, adopting significant changes to the teaching profession requires a deep shift in thinking and in culture. It’s worth understanding where faculty may be coming from. It’s also worth remembering that everyone on campus has the same objective: giving students the best education possible and preparing them for rewarding futures.

Personalized Scam Emails on the Rise

Smaller institutions report an increase in sophisticated attempts to gain access to financial and personal information. Hackers are taking the time to get to know smaller colleges. IT departments at smaller institutions are reporting that they are spending increasing amounts of time protecting against the kind of sophisticated, personalized attacks that once plagued mostly large research universities. Gone are the days of typo-ridden emails with questionable grammar addressed to “Dear Sir.” In their place are emails seemingly from legitimate senders — administrators and local businesses among them — that seek to gain access to financial and personal information. The fraudulent emails often asks recipients to double-check a payment, forward copies of tax paperwork or initiate a wire transfer. “You can’t just hide behind your small size,” said Nathan Phillips, chief information officer at Marylhurst University, a private liberal arts university just outside Portland, Ore. “What seems to have changed in the last year or two is that the attacks seem to be more directed. People are clearly doing research on who they’re targeting.”

Helping faculty tackle STEM tech ed issues

The $20,000 grants, which AACC provides with support from the National Science Foundation, allow faculty, with the support of their institution’s administration, to test ideas to resolve issues that may have been lingering for years or that may be emerging with new technologies. To encourage innovation, AACC’s staff provides attentive, flexible support and resources. Mentors offer advice upon request and ask motivational questions. Faculty at the three community colleges featured today executed ambitious, multi-faceted plans that evolved during the past two years to meet the needs of students and communities.

How to Go Textbook Free

The University of Maryland University College is the largest institution in the country to go “commando” on textbooks. As of this academic year undergraduates don’t have to lug them around or spend a dime on them — and the benefits don’t end there. Here’s how UMUC achieved an amazing goal. If you’re waiting for the day when open educational resources (OER) have truly arrived on campus in a big way, you’re late to class. As of fall 2015, the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) no longer expects any undergraduate to spend money on textbooks. By next fall, the same will be true for its graduate students. The conservative estimate of savings for the university’s 84,000 students is somewhere north of $10 million per year. And more importantly, the university has reason to believe that student learning is improving under the new strategy.

Report: Detachable Devices To Drive Tablet Growth Through 2020

Detachable tablets will nearly quadruple, as a share of the tablet market, from 8 percent to 30 percent in 2020, according to a new forecast from International Data Corp. (IDC). Overall, tablet shipments will drop 5.9 percent from 2015 to 2016, falling to 195 million sales this year, according to the company, but IDC expects the segment to rebound to positive, single-digit growth, largely on the strength of detachable devices, which it predicts will grow from 16.6 million shipments in 2015 to 63.8 million in 2020. “Beyond the growing demand for detachable devices, we’re also witnessing an increase in competition within this segment that will help drive design, innovation, and a decline in average prices,” said Jean Philippe Bouchard, research director for tablets at IDC, in a prepared statement.

It’s Not About Making Stuff

In the past few years, the thinking around 3D printing has shifted, as the technology has become more or less intertwined with the idea of makerspaces and the maker movement. The “stuff” that students create in makerspaces, via 3D printing or other technologies, is now less important than the overall “maker” experience — interdisciplinary collaboration, hands-on problem-solving, digital literacy, entrepreneurship and more. As the 2016 NMC Horizon Report noted, “Regardless of what they encompass, the general purpose of makerspaces is to provide a place for users to engage in self-directed activities that spark their curiosity, help them identify passions, and build a habit of lifelong learning. By participating in hands-on design and construction in makerspaces, students engage in creative problem-solving and higher-order thinking.”

10 data safety principles every school should be following

Are you following this checklist of best practices for safe data collection and use? The Consortium for School Networking and the Data Quality Campaign have released a new set of 10 principles to help guide schools in protecting the student data they store. The guidelines spell out dos and don’ts of collecting and storing data as well as best practices for sharing and using them appropriately. For example, the new guidelines suggest limiting access to student data, collecting only what’s necessary, and providing training to anyone coming in contact with it. Suggestions for proper governance is also included.

Google Wants To Give You EdTech For Doodling

Want to bring cutting edge to your classroom AND have your work seen by millions at the same time? Check out the Doodle4Google contest that’s ending soon. Basically, students get a scholarship, internet fame, and your school gets a sweet education technology grant in exchange for a winning doodle. If you don’t know what a GoogleDoodle is, you can read more here. Google has opened up contests in the past for students to design the Doodle. This year is no different – they’re once again running their Doodle4Google contest, hoping to inspire young people to doodle the biggest and best things their imaginations can dream up. As of today, there are 12 days left to submit a doodle! The last date for entries is Thursday, March 20th.

Obama Proposes $670 Million for STEM, Technology Training

President Barack Obama’s budget proposal for 2015 includes efforts to reorganize STEM education and bring ed tech training to schools. The budget that he announced on Tuesday, March 4, includes $670 million for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and ConnectED, a federal broadband project designed to reach 99 percent of schools. While STEM appeared in his budget last year, broadband did not. This next fiscal year, Obama wants to spend $170 million on STEM, a drop of $244.70 million from last year’s proposal.
