8 Billion Mobile Devices by 2019, but Can Batteries and Chargers Keep Pace?

by David Nagel, THE Journal

The installed base of mobile devices is expected to hit 8 billion worldwide by 2019, according to a new forecast. But can the technologies that power these devices keep pace with this growth? According to ABI Research, which produces market reports and forecasts for the technology sector, there are, at present, about 10 “untethered,” rechargeable (i.e., mobile) devices per house in “advanced markets.” And this figure is only going to increase. Despite that, both power storage and charging technologies aren’t keeping pace at all. “The opportunity is enormous…. The growth in wearables driven by the likes of Samsung and now Apple will increase this number further, along with the Internet of Things, and even electric cars.

Resources for Connected Educator Month 2014

by Edutopia

Edutopia is one of the many organizations, companies, and communities participating in the third annual Connected Educator Month (CEM), a celebration of online communities of practice originally developed by the U.S. Department of Education with partners. As with previous years, October 2014 is sure to include an array of rich opportunities for informal professional development, both for educators with established professional learning networks (PLNs) and for those just getting started. Explore the resources below as a guide to connecting, sharing, and collaborating with your network during October and all year long.

Can data analytics make teachers better educators?

By Thor Olavsrud, IT World

Teachers are an excellent example. They’ve always been data workers — assessing students’ understanding of the material based on test scores, classroom engagement, quality of homework, etc., with the goal of improving that understanding. Knowing that individual students learn in different ways, many schools today have adopted the idea of personalized learning as their pedagogical approach: They assess each student on their learning needs, interests, aspirations and cultural backgrounds to create a personalized education program designed to maximize education outcomes.

Why It’s Time To Rethink (And Question) Homework

By Katie Lepi, Edudemic

The concept of homework as we have known it in the past is changing rapidly, since it often distorts the overall picture of learning. Flipped classrooms, the ability to use the same technology and tools both in and out of the classroom, and personalized learning are making ripples in the education world. And while most of us think about these things and how they apply to the classroom and what we do there, we don’t always talk about how that changes what we have our students doing at home (aside from perhaps discussions on flipped classrooms).

Report: Most Districts Have Deployed Mobile Tech, Want More

By Joshua Bolkan, THE Journal

Eighty-two percent of districts are “highly interested” in launching or expanding a 1:1 technology initiative within the next two years, according to a new report from Amplify and IESD. The report, the “2014 National Survey on Mobile Technology for K-12 Education,” also found that the number of districts reporting that at least one-quarter of their schools had deployed mobile devices had risen to 71 percent, up from 60 percent in 2013. Forty-four percent of districts surveyed said that approximately 75 percent of their schools had deployed mobile technology. “The most commonly expected and sought after benefits from adopting mobile technology for student instruction,” wrote the report’s author, “included their potential to increase student achievement, be engaging for students, and support personalization of instruction to meet the needs of different students.”

Memorial Day in the Classroom: Resources for Teachers

by Matt Davis, Edutopia

For most students, Memorial Day means a three-day weekend, one last mini-break before the end of the school year. But the last Monday in May is perfect for engaging projects that honor the men and women who lost their lives in war. Here are some of the best lesson plan resources for Memorial Day, along with some engaging multimedia resources. It’s not always easy to capture student attention late in the school year, but hopefully these resources help. First, this brief video from The History Channel looks at the origins of the holiday, and you might also want to check out their resource page as well.
