How Universal Design for Learning can help the LMS reach every learner

UDL is gaining attention in colleges and universities as a way to make digital learning programs more accessible to all learners. An exciting and well-established concept known as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is gaining attention in higher education as a way to make digital learning programs more accessible to all learners, including those with a wide variety of learning challenges. Endorsed by EDUCAUSE’s Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE) and the Department of Education’s Horizon Report, UDL is a framework to design learning in a systematic way to anticipate and remove barriers to student learning. UDL isn’t about accommodating people after the fact, or just for students with physical or learning challenges–it is meant to design learning that’s engaging and effective for everyone, right from the get-go.

What’s the Difference Between Cognitive Computing and AI?

Artificial intelligence agents decide which actions are the most appropriate to take, and when they should be taken. These agents most often take the form of machine learning algorithms, neural networks, statistical analysis and more.   Cognitive computing is often described as simply marketing jargon, so crafting a working definition is important, although it’s more fluid right now, and there isn’t one consensus that industry experts have settled on. Still, the foundation is that cognitive computing systems try to simulate human thought processes. This process uses many of the same fundamentals as AI, such as machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, contextual awareness and sentiment analysis, to follow the problem-solving processes that humans do day in and day out. IBM defines the result of cognitive computing as “systems that learn at scale, reason with purpose and interact with humans naturally.”

How could the Internet of Things change the game for content marketers?

The Internet of Things has the potential to bring a new age of content marketing. How can marketers prepare for this change? The Internet of Things is a growing trend, and the idea of keeping everyone connected through everyday devices is becoming an increasingly established concept. According to IHS, there were 15.4 billion connected devices in 2015, with the number expected to grow to 30.7 billion in 2020 and 75.4 billion in 2025. This is reflected in the projections for the revenue it can bring. According to Machina Research, the revenue from the Internet of Things is expected to increase from $892 billion in 2015 to $4 trillion in 2025.

30 Middle Schools to Pilot OER Math Curriculua

A California-based nonprofit is bringing its openly-licensed and standards-aligned mathematics curricula to 30 middle schools in five school districts this year. The curricula from Open Up Resources, developed in partnership with Illustrative Mathematics, aims to provide the schools with quality open educational resources (OER) at a better price than traditional publishers. Open Up Resources launched earlier this week after raising $10 million in investments from its supporting philanthropic organizations. Prior to the launch it was called the K–12 OER Collaborative, an initiative founded by 13 states that wanted to create OER for K–12 mathematics and English language arts.

Companies Settle with New York to Stop Tracking Children Online

Hasbro, which makes the My Little Pony website, is among the companies that have illegally allowed children’s viewing habits to be tracked online. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has reached settlements with four major companies, blocking them from using tracking technology on their popular children’s websites. The settlements require that Viacom, Mattel and Jumpstart pay penalties totaling $835,000 following an investigation dubbed Operation Child Tracker, according to WABC-TV, the attorney general’s media site and other news sources. The two-year investigation found that the companies violated a 1998 federal law, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, that prohibits unauthorized collection of children’s personal information on websites aimed at users under 13. “What we found, frankly, was shocking,” Schneiderman said during a press conference this week. “Many of the sites that are home to our most popular TV shows and toys were littered with technology that can be used to track every move a child makes on that site.”

Buttercups and Orange Bus create online learning platform for pharmacy students

National training provider Buttercups has collaborated with Newcastle-based digital agency Orange Bus on an international project to develop the next generation of pharmacy talent. Orange Bus, which has offices in Newcastle, Edinburgh and London, was approached Buttercups to build a dedicated web-based platform that allows pharmacy support staff to study for nationally recognised qualifications. The open source platform from Drupal combines content management and learner reporting tools to allow the easy creation of engaging, social and interactive content for learners to access from any device. The project was launched after Buttercups discovered Pennsylvania State University had developed a new approach to building e-learning platforms. Experts at the university have spent years developing a feature-rich system that can be extended and adapted to any user need.

An Online College That Credits Life Experience

West­ern Gov­ernors Uni­versity is one of nearly three dozen col­leges and pro­grams—non­profit and for-profit alike—that are try­ing a fledgling mod­el of school­ing known as com­pet­ency-based edu­ca­tion. Its core idea: Stu­dents fare bet­ter if they earn de­grees based on their demon­strated know­ledge of a sub­ject in­stead of simply on face-time or per­form­ance in a tra­di­tion­al classroom. “It ba­sic­ally means that we will meas­ure learn­ing rather than time,” says Robert W. Mend­en­hall, pres­id­ent of West­ern Gov­ernors Uni­versity. “Com­pet­ency-based learn­ing means stu­dents can learn at their own pace.”

A Free, Online Course Exploring the Science of Phobos and Deimos

Here’s a great opportunity to brush up on (or generate) your knowledge of the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI) is sponsoring a free, online course on the science and exploration potential of Phobos and Deimos, featuring a series of lectures by experts in planetary science. I’m particularly interested in this, of course, because of our forthcoming workshop report highlighting a human mission to explore Phobos in 2033. But these will be great for any space fan who wants to bring their understanding of the Mars system to the next level.

Weston High behind new online learning initiative

EdX, the online learning venture founded by Harvard and MIT, recently announced a new high school initiative – 26 MOOCs (massive open online courses) in a wide variety of subjects geared to high school students around the world. Three of the selected 26 MOOCs were developed by Weston High School and are featured on edx.org, among courses developed by other leading high school and university institutions like MIT, University of Texas at Austin, Rice, University of California at Berkeley and more. Covering subject areas that range from mathematics to science, English and history, and even college advising and AP onramps, edX high school MOOCs will provide students within the U.S. and around the world the opportunity to pursue challenging, advanced coursework.

Lack of encouragement a barrier to girls pursuing a career in science, math, new study suggests

MasterCard is launching a national campaign to bring more girls and women into the tech field. In partnership with Ladies Learning Code , the cross-country program will see more than 700 girls (ages 8 to 13) and their parents take a free, six-hour introductory coding class, held simultaneously across the country November 8th. The University of Waterloo , another partner, will also participate by hosting a Python-language coding workshop aimed at students who are in non-STEM disciplines in an effort to introduce a variety of students to coding in a supportive and female-friendly environment. In addition, MasterCard is working with the Centre for Education in Math and Computing (CEMC) and the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo to introduce a first-of-its-kind free online teaching and learning resource in 2015 that will be open to everyone. The courseware is designed to help students learn to program and support teachers in their daily classroom work.
