Redesigning the Syllabus to Reflect the Learning Journey

Conventional syllabi are developed from the perspective of the teacher—designed to present what he or she plans to include in a course. I wanted to develop an alternative version that looked through the lens of the student, and my vision was to tailor each one to reflect what a particular learner would be doing every step of the way throughout the course. This was not simply a more visually appealing version of a classic syllabus, it was a radical overhaul of the student experience with the primary goal of changing their perception of their role as a learner. This drastic class redesign demanded that I ask myself some big questions: what content was required, what elements of learning could students control and what traditional and new measures I could use to gauge progress? High school juniors can apply for aerospace class

Idaho high school juniors can apply to take an aerospace class this spring, with the chance to visit the NASA Ames Research Center in Sunnyvale, Calif. Registration will be open through Nov. 18. The Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars program is offered through a cooperation between the Idaho Department of Education and NASA. Once accepted into the program, students will sign up for an online class offered through the Idaho Digital Learning Academy by going to their IDLA school site coordinator. The class will be offered from January through May and students will receive one science elective credit for completing the class.

Texas’ big strides in preparing students for college math

A new math course is boosting collaboration and learning and may be key to getting more students college ready. In Texas, 51% of two-year and 12 percent of four-year students required remediation upon entry to college.i Complete College America found that, of two year college students who took developmental classes, only 5.8% earned a degree in three years. As an effort to address these challenges, in 2013 Texas passed House Bill 5, an innovative education legislation that included a College Prep Mathematics course as one means to increase the number of college-ready students. This course provides high school seniors who are still struggling with mathematics concepts needed for college an opportunity to complete their preparation for college mathematics.

Report: 4 in 10 Wristworn Devices Will Be Smartwatches by 2016

Four out of every 10 devices worn on the wrist will be smartwatches by 2016, according to a new report from market research firm Gartner. That prediction follows a swell in the smartwatches available to consumers as the number of companies offering the devices has increased from just two a year ago to seven with a device either currently on the market or about to ship.

Artificial intelligence is really the goal of trying to develop algorithms that can learn and act. Older AI research ran up against this difficulty that people didn’t really know what intelligence was. Machine learning is a much more modern approach to solving the AI problem where we are coming from the bottom up rather than top down, so we are saying, well, let’s define these really crisp, well-defined, sub-problems, like classifying a handwritten digit as being either a one or two, and then use novel techniques within statistics and optimisation to create an algorithm that can improve its performance over time.
