Most Ed Institutions Unprepared for Data Risks

Nearly four in five, 77 percent, of education institutions are unprepared for IT risks, according to a new survey from Netwrix. Respondents told researchers that employees are the biggest threat to system availability and security at the same rate, 77 percent and 79 percent said that they do not use any software for information security or risk management.

Faculty Say Laptops, Mobile Phones Are Most Popular Student Devices

Any faculty member who has looked out at a sea of open laptops in class can tell you that the devices are the go-to technology for college and university students today. In fact, 57 percent of respondents in our 2017 Teaching with Technology Survey, which asked faculty to dish on their experiences with technology in the classroom, singled out laptops as the No. 1 favorite computing device used by their students. Mobile phones came in second, cited by 33 percent of respondents.

Chief Information Security Officers: Moving Away from IT

The CISO role in higher education is evolving, putting more emphasis on enterprise risk management and policy development. As data breaches and cybercrime gain a higher profile in higher education, the role of the chief information security officer is changing — and broadening beyond IT. The increasing sense of urgency is bringing people from different backgrounds to the CISO post, and is raising questions about budgets and reporting structures as well. “Higher education is starting to recognize that cyber risk is the same as other types of business risk,” said Brian Kelly, CISO at Quinnipiac University (CT). “It is the same type of consideration as someone falling down a staircase. We are closer to those cabinet-level conversations around risk. It has gone beyond being an IT problem.”

Penn State Turns to 3D Printing, Online Learning to Teach Students About the Brain

A Pennsylvania State University research project is exploring the use of 3D printing and interactive technology to teach middle school students about the human brain. Researchers in the Brain3M project, funded by the Penn State Social Science Research Institute, have come up with a tailored online learning platform that allows students to go through a series of virtual 3D structure models and descriptions of the brain along with photos and diagrams that illustrate the complex concepts concerning how the human brain works.

UC San Francisco Outsourcing IT Ops to India

IT people are sounding sick from the announcement that the University of California San Francisco intends to outsource many of its technology functions to an India-based service provider. Reporting by Computerworld found that layoffs for some 17 percent of the institution’s 565-employee IT staff will hit next February — after those same workers have trained Indian replacements employed by HCL Technologies. The university is focused entirely on health areas, with four schools: dentistry, nursing, medicine and pharmacy. According to UCSF’s website, there are currently 3,114 students enrolled in degree programs, 1,479 residents and 1,127 post-doctoral scholars. However, that small student body belies the size of the overall institution, which is currently the second largest employer in the city. UCSF’s paid workforce comprises 22,000 staff and nearly 2,800 faculty.

Mobile Journaling App Helps Students Document Field Learning

Tying together timelines, note-taking, geolocation and multimedia, The Traveler provides a cutting-edge mobile journaling experience for students working in the field, starting with the ability to record and visualize their pathways. In order to analyze field experiences effectively, students needed to make more detailed records of their in-the-field observations. They needed a way to collect thoughts and discussions in the field and be able to link them to photographs, notes, sketches and other documentation. Recognizing that mobile technology could provide a useful tool to meet those needs, Ball State’s Information Technology team developed The Traveler, an Android app that allows students to create a record and visualization of their pathways, based on timelines, effective note-taking, geolocation and annotated multimedia curation.

Report: Online Credit Recovery Programs Benefit from Personalized, Blended Learning Approach

More than 75 percent of school districts are using blended and online learning for credit recovery and to expand course offerings, according to a new report from the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), but the type of program and method of implementation has an effect on its success. The report, “Using Online Learning for Credit Recovery: Getting Back on Track to Graduation,” is intended to provide districts with guidance on how to help at-risk or returning students earn the course credits required for high school graduation. Topics covered in the report include the effect of credit recovery programs on students, various approaches to delivery of credit recovery and case studies and lessons learned from those case studies.

Online math textbook enhances learning for Wichita students

Algebra and geometry in Wichita schools just got a little more real-world and a lot more online. The district launched a new online textbook this fall for middle- and high-school students that aims to reinforce standard math concepts with online videos, games, drag-and-drop puzzles and other activities geared toward more visual learners. “Everything is done within the context of the new (Kansas College and Career Ready) standards,” said Liz Peyser, a middle-school math coach for the Wichita district. The new standards are based primarily on Common Core State Standards, an outline of what students should learn in math and English in each grade through high school.
