Most Experts Predict a “Mix of Models” for Future of Ed

by Dian Schaffhauser, Campus Technology

Experts in higher education, technology, government and research expect the future of workplace training to include new kinds of educational offerings that can train large numbers of workers in the skills they’ll need. That overall conclusion came out of a query on the topic posed by the Pew Research Center and Elon University, generating some 1,400 responses. The specific question people were answering was this: “In the next 10 years, do you think we will see the emergence of new educational and training programs that can successfully train large numbers of workers in the skills they will need to perform the jobs of the future?” Among those answering were education leaders, scholars, technologists, practitioners and other “strategic thinkers.” Seven in 10 respondents said, yes, that such programs would emerge and be successful.

Is your campus using this hidden recruiting gem?

BY LAURA ASCIONE, eCampus News

Social media should be a key component of higher education institutions’ minority recruitment strategies, according to a new report. A survey of 5,580 college-bound students reveals that underrepresented student groups are more likely than their counterparts to rely on social media such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram to learn about colleges. These student groups are also more likely to interact with colleges and universities on social media throughout their college search, according to the survey by Royall & Company, a division of EAB. The survey found that underrepresented students were more likely to initially learn about a school on social media than their counterparts.

Gates Foundation provides snapshot of today’s American college student

By Jarrett Carter, Education Dive

Research by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation offers a statistical profile of college students in America and includes details that may surprise some administrators about who they are serving. The report found 62% of students are working full- or part-time while pursuing their degrees, and nearly as many (59%) are commuting to class from off-campus residences. Two-thirds of all college students are full-time, non-Pell Grant eligible students who attend four-year institutions. The number of students who exclusively take courses online (13%) may also be surprising to some.

Classroom tech may become question of what to wear

vy Jarrett Carter, Education Dive

New research suggests wearable technology may grow by 46% in the next four years, and that colleges and universities may be among the largest consumer group for the technology in an effort to bolster student living and learning experiences. Schools like Oral Roberts University currently require first-year students to purchase and wear Fitbit devices to track fitness and activity levels. The school uses the synced data to build profiles of student academic, personal achievement. The projected boom in wearable technology presents additional challenges for campus IT officials, with potential threats to network security and data privacy increasing with the number of personal enterprise devices on campus.

Educators From Every UNC System University Expand Online Teaching Abilities

By Amanda Wilcox, Times Warner Cable News

UNC system teachers from across the state are learning more about online teaching as the new education avenue continues to expand across the U.S. The National Center for Education Statistics reports more than 46,000 students took classes exclusively online through North Carolina universities in 2012. This week, 28 teachers from every UNC school are in Wilmington for the Instructional Innovation Incubator (i3) conference to learn more about teaching online. “Most of them have never taught online before. So they are brave and they are very motivated to learn more about teaching in online environments,” said Diana Ashe, with the UNCW Center for Teaching Excellence. The week-long conference is giving the instructors the opportunity to develop their own online courses. Thursday, they also learned about the tools available to them.

Designing an iPad initiative with goals in mind will help steer your district toward success

by Laura Devaney, eSchool News

As educators and school leaders would likely agree, any technology initiative begins not with an iPad or a laptop, but with teaching and learning goals. But once school leaders have identified those goals, created a plan, and moved to implementation, what are some of the keys to success? David Mahaley, head of school for the Franklin Academy’s high school program and a teacher at the school, outlined a number of steps and considerations that are essential to a successful mobile deployment.

Apple alters the future again — here’s how

by Lewis Wallace, Cult of Mac

Instead of dropping an iWatch or some other hardware bombshell at WWDC, Apple showcased the futuristic tools it will use to extend its rapidly growing empire. “Apple engineers platforms, devices and services together,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook as he wrapped up the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote Monday in San Francisco. “We do this so we can create a seamless experience for our users that is unparalleled in the industry. This is something only Apple can do.” Yet while there were was absolutely no talk of new hardware, Apple offered an exciting peek at where the world is headed next with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, both of which are available to developers now and will be released to the public this fall. “We’re always future-focused,” said Cook, who shared presenting duties with Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, and others. Here’s a look at the shiny, translucent, interconnected future Apple is focusing upon.

By Agam Shah, IDG

Intel wants to completely eliminate wires from computers, and is working on a series of wireless technologies to make that a reality in the coming years. PCs are on the way to a “true no-wire” experience, and Intel is working on technologies to remove the clutter of power cords, display connectors and peripheral cables, said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president, and general manager of the PC Client Group at Intel, during a speech at the Computex trade show in Taipei. Intel is working on new wireless charging, docking, display and data transfer technologies. Skaugen shared details of the new wireless technologies and provided demonstrations of how they would work during the keynote.
