Online courses give people more flexibility and less commitment when it comes to learning the basics of any skill. Many are free and the ones that aren’t often offer a free trial. Why is it so hard to find expertise in IoT & AI?

Traditional learning avenues like schools and colleges haven’t kept pace. While many engineering colleges offer electives in IoT or AI as part of the curriculum, the course content is very basic. Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been two of the fastest growing fields of technology in recent history—in India and across the world. The potential they hold to transform business and economy has been capturing the attention of CEOs, entrepreneurs, young professionals and students alike. Over the last four years that we’ve been tracking this space, the use-cases and business-cases being explored have matured significantly, and in the last 18 months there has even been an uptick in the number of companies ready to make investments in exploratory efforts. Yet we don’t see many pilot projects going on in India.

Using Kinect Sensors and Facial Recognition in the Classroom

A project at Carnegie Mellon University promises to change that with the use of sensors in the classroom hooked to software to help TAs — especially those from other countries — refine their teaching skills in STEM courses. Computer-Aided Noticing and Reflection (CANAR) is the project of Amy Ogan, an assistant professor in the Human Computer Interaction Institute, and Ph.D. student David Gerritsen. The work is being supported by a $174,000 National Science Foundation grant. As Ogan explained the problem, “Many of our teaching assistants in universities today come from a wide variety of cultures.”  The ultimate goal of the project is to support improved teaching and learning in university classrooms by bridging cultural divides between students and their teachers.

Kentucky schools connect with homeschool kids via online courses

Wayne County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Allen Clark is offering a deal to homeschool families: If a homeschool student is willing to enroll in the district taking online courses, the district will pay for the classes. “We assign a teacher from our high school and they work with the child,” Clark said. Wayne County Assistant Superintendent Allen Clark Wayne County Schools. If the student passes the classes, which cost about $100 total, Wayne County can count them in its average daily attendance numbers and receive state funds — about $3200 per student, per school year, according to Clark. About seven or eight of the district’s 75 homeschool students took him up on the offer in 2015-16, and he hopes that 15 to 20 students enroll for 2016-17.

HIGHER EDUCATION: Why do women lead STEM dropouts?

Women are fleeing the lab in larger numbers than men. Despite years of effort to encourage female students to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math – so called STEM fields – a new study by researchers at the University of Missouri finds that gender is a primary indicator in dropout rates for college programs. Education professor Lisa Floresand her team are in the midst of a five-year study of 12 engineering colleges. Preliminary results indicate that while dropout rates seem to vary little along ethnic lines, there is a distinct difference between men and women. No numbers were provided with the preliminary findings.

Girl’s petition helps change boys-only robotics class

An all-boy club for anything sounds weird to many of us nowadays, but that’s exactly what was going on … in a library of all places. The Timmins Public Library in Ontario denied letting girls into a summer session on robotics. That was until this Change.org petition by Cash Cayen went online and got over 30,000 supporters. Cash says the library wouldn’t let her join the session because it was only offered to boys. They did offer to put her on a waiting list. This all comes as the effort to get women and girls interested in the world of science and engineering continues to gain traction. And it seems to be working. A study by the National Science Foundation found girls are earning math and science credits at roughly the same rates as boys.

More Ohio students learning via online schools

More children than ever in Ohio are learning via online schools, a trend that local parents say is more the result of wanting more for their child than it is about their local school district. Increased popularity for this option has seen enrollments totals blossom from 44 such schools serving approximately 17,000 students in 2004 to 27 e-schools serving 39,044 students in the 2013-14 school year. That simultaneous decrease in the amount of schools and increase in enrollment has bolstered class ranks, leading to numerous Ohio e-learning institutions graduating their largest classes ever, including Ohio Virtual Academy, an accredited, full-time, online public community school that in June graduated 750 students, the largest graduating class in school history.

Technology will be woven into most courses: Sushil Vachani

So, if you look ahead, the education sector is at an inflection point. There are some obvious things—there is an increasing demand for education. But the big change that has occurred already is that technology is creating enormous opportunities for delivery of education. Online education has always been there. But all along, people kind of looked down their nose on online education. But in 2011, Stanford opened up their course on Artificial Intelligence as a MOOC. There were about 160,000 students registered for that course across the world. And only 23,000 completed the course. But there were still 23,000 students who completed it. This was a big deal not because an online course was being offered, but because one of the world’s best institutions was putting its stamp of approval on online education. And then other universities began to wake up. This is a tremendous opportunity, but it’s also a threat. The opportunity is that any university in the world can beam its course around the world. People who couldn’t afford a world-class education, can afford it. The threat is that they can come into your market.
