ICC increases hybrid class offerings

By Sharon Woods Harris, Pekin Daily Times

Sitting in a classroom day in and day out is not for everyone, especially non-traditional students going back to school or military personnel returning back to the states and reentering civilian life. In the hybrid setting, students attend class in person once a week and complete the rest of the coursework online. ICC has offered hybrid classes for many years, but it is offering evening hybrid courses this year for working people and veterans, among others. There will be one 16-week hybrid, and for those who want to finish a course quickly, eight-week courses are also offered.

Online class could help you save your pet’s life

by Liz Cohen, WKBW

A lot of us know how to help someone if they’re choking. But would you know what to do if the same thing was happening to your pet? The Red Cross just started offering an online class to teach you how to give your dog or cat first aid. So you’ll know what to do in an emergency before you can get your pet to the vet. It goes through how to figure out your pet’s normal vital signs like their body temperature and heart rate so you can notice if anything is off. You’ll also get instructions for what to do if your pet is choking, needs CPR, is bleeding or is having a seizure.

Ensuring ‘Anytime Anywhere’ Access in a High-Poverty District

By Dan Gordon, THE Journal

In two years on the job as deputy superintendent of educational services for the Santa Ana Unified School District, David Haglund has helped usher in a new era of “anytime, anywhere access to learning.” The high-poverty district, in which more than 90 percent of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, is embracing BYOD as it emphasizes competency-based, project-based and blended learning. The centerpiece is the Advanced Learning Academy, a dependent charter school for elementary and middle school students that opened last fall with a focus on a high-tech, project-based and STEM curriculum. The district has also begun using Lightspeed classroom audio systems to allow teachers to be heard clearly and to be able to listen in on small-group discussions.

But, if we want to, we can take advantage of the Internet’s best features to our personal improvement. The web can be used to learn about investment, to enhance technical skills, learn a new language, complement studies and develop a hobby, or even focus on entrepreneurial skills. The 7 do’s and don’ts of creating your own OERs

By Laura Devaney, eSchool News

Whether you know it or not, most educators have already started creating their own open educational resources (OER) in the form of tests, handouts, and presentations. Bringing them on online to share with other educators is just the natural next step. But there are best practices creating and sharing OERs, which are resources that are freely shared and able to be modified and redistributed. This “grass-roots, bottom-up” approach to content creation enables educators to tailor content to meet students’ needs,” said Tyler DeWitt, an MIT Ph.D. student and a student coordinator for the MIT+K12 video outreach project, during an edWeb webinar, which explored these and other related takeaways and gave several tips for creating OERs that work for educators.

More Guilford students take advantage of online classes

By Marquita Brown, Greensboro.com

More students in Guilford County are studying science, Spanish, SAT prep and other courses. But they’re doing it while getting more screen time than face time with a teacher. Such self-guided classrooms aren’t taking the place of the traditional classroom — at least not yet. They are an increasingly popular way for some students to get an edge on their peers. About 2,000 students have taken online classes in Guilford County Schools each year since 2012, when the system first started its virtual public school. Students don’t have to pay to take the classes.

University Of Missouri Offers 10% Tuition Discount For Online Degree Programs

by Hanna Sanchez, iSchool Guide

The University of Missouri has decided to offer a 10 percent discount on its online degree programs for the upcoming semester this fall. The tuition drop is an effort to lure more in-state students to take online courses. The University of Missouri is offering in-state students a tuition drop on its online degree program, Mizzou Online, this fall. The school said Missouri students will save 10 percent if they enroll online, which costs about $82.86 per course. To qualify, students also must have attended a public community college in the state and be working on a degree from an undergraduate distance program.

Integrating video into our classrooms can be a great way not only to get students more engaged in the material you’re presenting to them, but to get them using technology, giving and getting feedback, and tapping all parts of their brain while they learn. See the videos and factoids linked below.

The Beginner’s Guide To The Internet Of Things

By Katie Lepi, Edudemic

What does ‘the internet of things’ mean, anyway? It is a term that I’ve heard periodically over the past few years but explored little and never wrote about here, as it doesn’t specifically refer to education and there are so many other (specifically) relevant things to share and talk about. The short explanation is that the Internet of Things refers to the interconnectedness of devices of all types – especially ‘smart’ devices that can react, anticipate, and adapt as necessary. In short, this interconnectedness and advancing technology is expected to simplify automation in so many areas of our lives. See the infographic linked below for more.

4 Ways Technology is Changing How People Learn

By Katie Lepi, Edudemic

When we talk about what changes technology has brought to classrooms across the globe, the answers could basically be never ending. Teachers could talk about things like bringing ease to researching all types of topics, bringing organization (and a lack of physical papers to lose) to the classroom, and making connections for professional development. There could be a lot of discussion about the millions of nuances of amelioration brought to classrooms – both physical and virtual. That said, the handy linked infographic below takes a look at 4 ways technology is changing how people learn.
