Students, teachers executed a virtual learning day to develop online learning and working skills

As college and career skills are touted as essential for students’ success after high school, students in one New Jersey school got a lesson in one fast-growing workplace trend: learning and working from home. Park Ridge High School in Bergen County, N.J., gave its 500 7-12th graders the option to stay home as part of a planned virtual learning day. Part of the impetus came from the realization that students should prepare for online-only college classes and for positions involving varying degrees of work-from-home options, said Troy Lederman, Park Ridge High School’s principal.

Online learning activity in public schools and districts

Based on observation and information from many sources, we believe that most districts are using some form of digital learning, which may range all the way from full-time online programs, to supplemental online courses, online courses that include some degree of face-to-face instruction, digital learning enhancements to classroom instruction, and skills software used in math, English Language Arts (ELA), and other classes. With the development of online courses to supplement student learning in the late 1990’s, national and state-level suppliers—vendors, state virtual schools, regional service agencies, and others—began providing schools and districts with online courses and technology. Internship grants give students experience with added perk: A paycheck

Internships have long paved the way for college students to gain real-world experience, but increasingly they also are a direct pipeline to jobs after graduation. So what are students to do if they can’t afford to give up a job that pays the bills to take an unpaid internship that will help them build networking and career skills? They keep the paying job and do the unpaid internship on top of it, while also juggling classes, as Marquette University senior Jasmine Hooks did during the fall semester. Or, if they are one of 179 students at Marquette who will benefit over the next three years from a $354,000 grant, they get an otherwise unpaid internship that is subsidized by private money, allowing them to take home a paycheck while picking up career skills and connections.

Broward libraries to offer online high school diplomas

Broward County adults who do not have high school diplomas will be able to get them – and some career training – through an online program launching at the public library. Funded by the state for the first time this year, Career Online High School offers accredited high school degrees and career certificates. Enrolled students take all their courses online with the support of an academic coach. The Broward County Library system is one of 11 in the state to pilot the program. It will provide full scholarships for 75 county residents to complete their degrees and certificates through the program, which normally would normally cost about $1,300.

Google Glass 2 Sports Foldable Frame, FCC Filing Shows

New documents filed with the FCC show an updated design for Google Glass 2, including a folding frame, and other details about the hardware’s construction. Documents filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have revealed new details about Google Glass 2, the search giant’s updated augmented reality device, including the hardware’s ability to fold. The FCC filing, first spotted by the blog 9to5Google, also shows the power button has now been moved to the back of the device, while the camera button is located on top near the display. The flat area on the side of the device is called the touchpad, which is used to navigate different cards on the display.
