Stanford Now Offers Minor in Digital Humanities

By Michael Hart, Campus Technology

In September, Stanford University launched a new minor in digital humanities, intended to combine digital tools with research and exploration of history, literature, languages and other humanities topics. Students in the minor can choose one of three focuses: geospacial humanities, text technologies or quantitative textual analysis. Each track has a corresponding introductory class that is partly method-based but also incorporates the larger themes of the digital humanities. The minor requires students to complete 20 units, including one core class of five units and five other courses with a minimum of three units each. Examples of course titles include “The Digital Middle Ages,” “Poetry and the Internet” and “Technologies of Enlightenment.” More than 70 courses throughout the university satisfy requirements for the minor, including those offered by the linguistics, history, management science and Earth sciences departments.

Does The New ClassDojo Have Mass Mojo?

By Mitch Fairchild, Edudemic

Using the ClassDojo reward system, I was able to award points to students for good behavior, or deduct points for poor choices. I was also able to let my parents follow the classroom management habits of their children via the app. The students responded positively and ClassDojo gave parents a way of keeping up with their student’s classroom behavior without having to communicate directly with me. Jump ahead to January of 2015. ClassDojo is releasing their newly redesigned app, and it promises to be faster, sleeker, and easier to use. I have to admit, I now teach secondary classes and I don’t use the app for the older students. But my curiosity got the better of me, and I had to check it out for myself. So, being the inquisitive sort, I quickly downloaded the new version and began investigating. After examining this version versus the old version, I observed the following.

Add Coding to Your Elementary Curriculum. . . Right Now

by Matt Harrell, Edutopia

As you well know, teachers are already stretched pretty thin, and often it seems like there’s just no bandwidth to add something new to a very full schedule. Additionally, some schools have few or no computers and/or tablets for classroom use. But the earlier we introduce children to coding, the more comfortable they will be when presented with more in-depth learning opportunities in middle and high school. Also, early exposure to coding helps teach children how important it is to understand computers as the valuable tools they are rather than merely fun playthings.

4 Ways to Engage Digitally Distracted Students

by Rony Zarom, edSurge

The demand for digital learning offerings presents new challenges for educators and administrators. One of the biggest is keeping students engaged. In one survey, 74 percent of students reported that the Internet distraction was “significant” and “worrying.” Educators have an opportunity to structure online learning environments in a way that addresses how students already interact online, and in a way that also reduces distraction and increases engagement. Here are four ways to get started.

10 Online Programs to Boost Your Business Skills

by Nicole Fallon, Business News Daily

No matter how long you’ve been out of school, you’re never truly done learning. This is especially true of entrepreneurs, many of whom figure out the ropes of running a business as they go. Taking opportunities to improve your business skills is always a good idea, but once you get your startup going, you likely won’t have the time or budget to go back to school and enroll in a traditional university course. The good news is, you don’t have to: There are plenty of online education programs designed specifically for entrepreneurs and small business owners who want to do more than just attend an occasional workshop or seminar.

Vocab Tech For Toddlers Encourages ‘Anytime, Anywhere Learning’

by Lynn Neary, National Public Radio

These days, a toddler is just as likely to meet Big Bird for the first time on a tablet or smartphone as on TV, says Michael Levine, executive director of the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. “Kids tend to consume across platforms and across settings,” Levine says. “They’re on the couch, they’re in the living room, they’re outside even, or they’re on the go. So these mobile media and these interactive platforms allow for anytime, anywhere learning.” Sesame Workshop is building on the popularity of characters like Big Bird as well as 45 years of educational research to create new digital products for young children. Testing is a key step in the development of these products.

Tablets make great learning tools for kids, but parents should be vigilant

By CAL POWELL, Online Athens

A University of Georgia human development specialist says the introduction of touchscreen tablets into the marketplace represents a technological “game changer” for kids. “The iPad and other tablets are logical: I touch this and something happens,” said Diane Bales, associate professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and UGA Extension specialist. “You’re seeing the connection between the action, and the interface is so easy.” The challenge for parents can be managing their child’s use of the device. “It can be misused,” Bales said. “There are a lot of apps and programs marketed to children that are not very appropriate in terms of being child-directed that aren’t building any deep knowledge.
