An online education provides many benefits, but it’s not for everyone

Technology is a defining characteristic of the 21st century. It is now so intertwined with every day life, it’s no surprise that educational institutions are trying to integrate increasing amounts technology into education. The University of Idaho has stressed the importance of this combination by working on a distance education plan in hopes of being able to provide more students, both undergraduate and graduate, with the opportunity to receive online degrees. It’s an opportunity for expansion that the UI simply can’t miss. This could be a tremendous opportunity for individuals who are interested in earning a degree but are unable to relocate to a university campus. The university offers more than 20 online degree options for graduate students, but undergraduates are currently unable to acquire a degree online. Expanding the university’s online degree program would not only help students who are unable to get to campus, but also increase UI’s educational outreach and influence.

Stanford PERTS Intros Mindset Kits for Educators

Stanford University’s Project for Education Research that Scales (PERTS) has launched a set of free online resources, dubbed the Mindset Kit, designed to help educators and parents understand how to help students develop learning mindsets. “When students have learning mindsets — for example, when they believe that intelligence is something they can develop and feel they belong and can succeed in the classroom — they are more motivated, engaged and resilient,” according to a Stanford news release. “Studies have also shown that certain messages can help students develop learning mindsets and, in turn, do better in school.”

Baker sees gigabit Internet as important competitive edge

All is on schedule for the Baldwin City campus to have fiber optic gigabit Internet access in the first or second week of August, said Bosch and Andy Jett, Baker’s chief information officer and vice president of strategic planning and academic resources. With that, gigabit access will be available in all university academic halls, sports venues, the Harter Student Union and residence halls, where 500 of the about 930 undergraduates on Baker’s Baldwin City campus reside. Faster Internet access will help improve Baker’s administrative efficiency and will have significant academic consequences going forward, but Jett said an important immediate factor for Baker administrators was the competitive edge it affords in recruiting high school graduates who grew up socializing, playing games, watching movies and TV shows and completing homework assignments on laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Feedback is generous and students can even gain lifetime access to the lessons. Online Peer Reviews Improve Literacy Instruction

English language arts teachers have long recognized the critical role meaningful feedback from peers has in process-writing classrooms. However, one limitation of traditional face-to-face peer response I noticed in my own teaching is that I never knew who was engaged with others and at what level. I didn’t have an efficient way of knowing who was giving (and who was getting) good feedback. Over the past few years, peer feedback has been integrated into learning management systems like Canvas, Blackboard, and Turnitin. Stand-alone applications like Peerceptiv and Eli Review are online peer review systems that provide data never possible in traditional face-to-face settings. I’ve recently begun incorporating Eli Review into my teaching and am excited about the potential for learning and literacy development.
