EdX Launching MOOCs with Free Certificates for Teacher Training and AP Prep

The teacher certificates will be issued for one year to all U.S. teachers who pass one of the teacher training courses. That will be extended for an additional four years for Title I teachers and others in high-need districts. Classes will train teachers on the use of technology in the classroom, teaching in a blended environment, and learning theory and leadership. Those classes will be available from Boston University, Davidson College, Teachers College at Columbia University and six other universities. The organization is also pursuing students in high-need and rural school districts around the country to take courses to help them prepare for advanced placement exams. Over the next five years students will be able to earn free, verified certificates in 40 different courses. AP prep MOOCs will be made available by the Cooper Union, Tennessee Board of Regents, Rice University and five other institutions.

Electronic portfolio projects have great potential to impact learning, assessment, and professional development. Yet expanding e-portfolios campuswide and sustaining the program isn’t easy. Here are four pitfalls to watch out for. CT spoke with Hepler and Teggin Summers, who was associate director of the e-portfolio program at Virginia Tech for six years before recently becoming director of that institution’s Innovation Space, about what it takes to roll out e-portfolios campuswide. Although their experiences are quite different — e-portfolios have taken hold in every college on Virginia Tech’s campus — both Hepler and Summers offered some observations on the key challenges of e-portfolio diffusion.

Where is the app integration and innovation in K-12?

I came back from TCEA, underwhelmed, not by the myriad of great presenters, but by vendor product offerings. Where were the companies transforming education and interconnecting systems so that educators can leverage multiple platforms as needed to help provide a better, more integrated learning experience? Most of what I saw was just incremental improvements of existing products. While there were some standouts, I was not wowed.

How To Start Using Augmented Reality In The Classroom

Whether you have iPad, Android, or a smartphone, scanning a trigger in the physical world with an AR app allows a new layer of information to appear. Successful eLearning begins with well-prepared teachers

Gardner-Webb University began delivering its new online curriculum using Teachscape’s professional learning system in fall 2013. When the state of North Carolina dramatically reduced textbook funding, yet decided it would implement the Common Core State Standards, our School of Education at Gardner-Webb University decided to fast-track a program to make all teacher preparation courses textbook-free. We did this with the goal of preparing our students for the environment they would experience when they enter the teaching field, as well as to better equip them to meet the digital expectations that will be asked of them once they graduate.

Education and Social Change

The 2013 Social Change Impact Report was designed to provide a barometer of who is engaged in social change, what is important to them and how they work together to advance social change issues of interest now and in the future. The Report identifies distinctive profiles of social change agents around the world and includes many of their key motivations, interests and levels of involvement, ultimately putting a face on social change agents. In addition to establishing these profiles, the 2013 survey reveals that participation in social change has maintained its importance, is widespread and is moving forward as a result of people working together to address the issues most important to them. The Education and Social Change Infographic presents the findings that reveal that education continues to play a vital role in providing opportunities for social change engagement, which, if modeled to and started at a young age, may lead to more involvement in adulthood.
